Glaucoma management and Laser treatment
 
Glaucoma is caused by a number of different eye diseases which in most cases produce increased pressure within the eye. This elevated pressure is caused by a backup of fluid in the eye. Over time, it causes damage to the optic nerve. Through early detection, diagnosis and treatment, you and your doctor can help to preserve your vision/td>
 
 
Types of Glaucoma
 
There are different types of glaucoma. The most common forms are:

1- Open-Angle Glaucoma
2- Closed–Angle Glaucoma
 
 
Open-Angle Glaucoma
 
Progressive optic nerve damage and visual field loss with an elevated intraocular pressure.

- Approximately one percent of all Americans have this form of glaucoma
- Most common form of glaucoma in our country
- Mainly in the over-50 age group.

There are no symptoms associated with POAG:

- Painless
- No Loss of vision early on
- Peripheral loss of vision as disease advances
- Complete loss of vision in advanced cases

People at risk have the following:

- Family History of Glaucoma
- Increased Intraocular Pressure
- Afro-American
- Age > 50 years
- Diabetes
 
 
Angle-Closure Glaucoma
 
Progressive optic nerve damage and visual field loss with an elevated intraocular pressurecaused by a closed angle of the eye. -Affects nearly half a million people in the United States.

Symptoms:

1- No Symptoms most of the times
2- May cause sudden blurry vision and pain known as "Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma

People predisposed to this condition:

1- Family History of Angle Closure Glaucoma
2- Asian Descent
3- Far-Sightedness (Hyperopia)
